Montather and Jason Maskiell may have proven a blow out result for those betting on the final race at Pakenham on Friday night but it provided a big thrill for connections of the chestnut who saluted in a nail biting finish at odds of $61.
Montather, a son of global superstar Dubawi who stands for over $650,000 in Europe, was bought to Australia for $280,000 but it had been close to 900 days since he last saluted at Chelmsford in the United Kingdom.
Purchased by RG Racing for a modest $8,000 at the end of last season, at his fifth run for the stable Montather banked $22,000 for connections with blinkers coming off up to 1400 metres.
“I think he just needs to get his toe into the ground, his first run for us he was super at a big price,” Reece Goodwin said.
“When the track was playing how it was tonight we thought we would go forward.”
The winner was a first for rider Jason Maskiell for the team, meanwhile stable Blesk was an eye-catching performance in the same race finishing fourth from well off the speed.
